Fellowship Call: Program for the Retention of PhDs in Brazil – PROFIX-CB (CNPq/CAPES/FAPEG). Deadline: October 1, 2026

CNPq, CAPES and the Goiás State Research Foundation (FAPEG) have launched Call No. 16/2026 — PROFIX-CB, aimed at attracting and retaining PhD holders at higher education institutions and at scientific, technological and innovation institutions based in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Total investment is R$ 30.7 million.

Thirty fellowships will be awarded under the Conhecimento Brasil scheme (BCB-1), worth R$ 13,000.00 per month for up to 48 months. Each approved proposal also receives one master's and one doctoral fellowship from CAPES, plus a FAPEG research grant of up to R$ 200,000.00.

Priority areas: information and communication technologies with emphasis on artificial intelligence; food tech; biotechnology, including pharmaceuticals and sustainable agricultural production systems; mining; civil construction; health; and public policy.

Requirements:

Doctoral degree obtained in Brazil or equivalent obtained abroad
No employment or functional link to a Brazilian institution at the start of the fellowship
Prior consent from the host institution and graduate program regarding accreditation as faculty, if approved
Lattes CV updated by the submission deadline
Not retired under the General Social Security Regime or an equivalent scheme

The Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Journal of Environmental Sciences (RBCIAMB), Professor Helen Treichel, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Engineering and Environmental Sciences (CA-CA) of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), for the 2026–2029 term.

CNPq's Advisory Committees are consultative bodies composed of researchers of recognized standing, responsible for advising the agency on the evaluation of research projects, the awarding of fellowships — including Research Productivity fellowships — and the formulation of policies for their fields of knowledge.

The appointment recognizes Professor Helen Treichel's scientific trajectory and her contribution to engineering and environmental sciences in Brazil. For RBCIAMB, having the journal's Editor-in-Chief serve on one of the country's leading scientific advisory bodies reinforces the journal's commitment to quality, rigor, and the strengthening of Brazilian environmental science.

Professor Arlindo Philippi Jr. receives the 2026 CAPES Anísio Teixeira Award in Brasília.

On July 1, the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) celebrated its 75th anniversary during a ceremony held at the Cláudio Santoro National Theatre in Brasília. The event brought together members of the academic community, public authorities, and researchers from across Brazil to commemorate the trajectory of one of the country's most important institutions for the development of graduate education, scientific research, and human resource training.

Throughout these seven and a half decades, CAPES has played a fundamental role in strengthening Brazil's National Graduate Education System, supporting master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral scholarships, evaluating graduate programs, and fostering national and international scientific cooperation — a decisive contribution to establishing Brazil as one of Latin America's leading producers of scientific knowledge.

As part of the celebrations, CAPES presented the 2026 CAPES Anísio Teixeira Award, one of the highest honors granted by the institution. Created to recognize individuals whose careers have made outstanding contributions to Brazilian higher education and scientific research, the award honored twenty distinguished scholars and educators in this special anniversary edition.

Among the awardees, special recognition goes to Professor Arlindo Philippi Jr., who received the CAPES Anísio Teixeira Award in Higher Education. Professor Philippi Jr. is widely acknowledged as one of the leading figures in the institutional development of Environmental Sciences in Brazil. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Environmental Sciences evaluation area within CAPES. He has also made decisive contributions to the consolidation of interdisciplinary research and graduate education in Brazil, achievements that have been recognized with two Jabuti Awards. News: National Seminar Addresses the Impact of Higher Education on the Sustainable Development Goals

On June 23 and 24, 2026, CAPES hosted, in Brasília, the National Seminar on the Impact of Higher Education on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the coordination of Prof. Carlos Alberto Cioce Sampaio, Coordinator of the Environmental Sciences Area at CAPES, and held in hybrid format, the event brought together 1,070 registrants, 75 in-person participants, and recorded 1,600 views, demonstrating broad national reach.

The initiative was organized by the University Center of the State of Pará (CESUPA), the University of Brasília (UnB), and the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), with support from CAPES. It was structured around dialogue panels composed of representatives from higher education institutions, funding agencies, CNPq, CONFAP, FOPROP, FORPROEX, IBICT, CNODS, and ANPG, as well as researchers and academic managers committed to the 2030 Agenda.

Conceived as a space for national dialogue and coordination, the Seminar focused on identifying, systematizing, and disseminating initiatives with significant impact — measurable or socially recognized — on the SDGs, encompassing the social, environmental, economic, and institutional dimensions of sustainable development, including the complementary SDGs proposed within the Brazilian context.

The program highlighted integrated experiences in teaching, research, innovation, and university outreach, reaffirming the strategic role of higher education and graduate studies in knowledge production, in the training of qualified human resources, and in building solutions to contemporary socio-environmental challenges. The debate on impact assessment, outcome indicators, and mechanisms for the visibility of academic contributions to society also held a central place in the agenda.

The event took place at a particularly relevant moment for the National Graduate Education System, marked by the growing recognition of science's impact on society and by the need to demonstrate, in objective terms, the contributions of higher education to the promotion of sustainable development. In this context, the Seminar reinforced the importance of integration among universities, funding agencies, the public sector, productive sectors, and civil society in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

For the Environmental Sciences community, the event represents an opportunity to reflect on the transformative capacity of interdisciplinary scientific production, social and technological innovation, and outreach actions oriented toward sustainability. Topics such as climate change, biodiversity, food security, sustainable cities, socio-environmental justice, education for sustainable development, and territorial governance reaffirm the centrality of the field in building responses to global and local challenges — and interdisciplinarity, a constitutive trait of Environmental Sciences, proves essential for understanding and addressing the complexity of these problems.

By fostering the exchange of experiences and the visibility of good practices, the National Seminar contributes to consolidating an agenda of cooperation and collective learning, strengthening the commitment of Brazilian higher education institutions to sustainability, social inclusion, and the construction of more just and resilient futures.

News: RBCIAMB advances in leading international scientific impact indicators: JCR and CiteScore

The Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais (RBCIAMB), a scientific publication of the Brazilian Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (ABES), has recorded significant advances in leading international scientific impact indicators. The results reflect an ongoing process of editorial strengthening and expanded international visibility, initiated in 2021 with the full publication of articles in English and consolidated by indexing in the Web of Science (WoS) in 2023 and in Scopus in 2024.

In the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the Web of Science, the journal's impact factor rose from 0.5 to 0.7, representing a 40% growth compared to the previous cycle. In Scopus, the CiteScore evolved from 0.7 to 1.1, corresponding to an increase of over 57%.

Despite its recent indexing in the Web of Science, RBCIAMB already ranks 165th among the 391 Brazilian journals currently indexed in the database, reflecting its upward trajectory and the growing recognition of the quality of its published work. The results are particularly significant given the short period elapsed since the journal's inclusion in the leading international indexing databases.

The simultaneous growth of both Web of Science and Scopus indicators demonstrates that the editorial strategy adopted is producing consistent results. The journal has sought to align itself with international best practices in scientific publishing and communication, continuously improving its editorial processes, strengthening peer review, and expanding its presence in the global scientific community.

For the editorial team, these advances represent more than numbers. They reflect the recognition of the work carried out by authors, reviewers, associate editors, and collaborators who contribute daily to establishing RBCIAMB as a center of excellence in the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the environmental field.

Tribute to Prof. Maria do Carmo Martins Sobral — World Environment Day

On this June 5th, World Environment Day, RBCIAMB pays tribute to Prof. Maria do Carmo Martins Sobral, our Editor Emerita and Editor-in-Chief in 2014–2015, whose life's work is, in itself, a declaration of love for the planet.

A Civil Engineer from UFPE, with a doctorate in Environmental Planning from the Technical University of Berlin and postdoctoral research in Germany and the Netherlands, Maria do Carmo has built a career that spans continents — from the University of Waterloo to IHE-UNESCO, from Oslo to UFPE, where she has been a full professor since 1983. More than 100 scientific articles, dozens of books and book chapters, and over 70 completed supervisions of master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students — her girls and her boys, as she likes to call them. A body of work that is not merely vast — it is purposeful.

Today's date carries a precious coincidence: fifteen years have passed since the creation of the Environmental Sciences Area at CAPES, a structure that Maria do Carmo helped to conceive and was the first to coordinate following its establishment. Even before this consolidation, as early as 2012, she had already foreshadowed the reach of this field by co-leading the coordination of the book Contribution from brazilian postgraduate studies to sustainable development Capes at Rio+20 — a landmark publication prepared by the Environmental Sciences Area for the United Nations Conference Rio+20. Fifteen years on, the field she helped to found continues to produce knowledge with vigor — and that story bears, in part, her indelible mark.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Pernambuco Academy of Engineering, and the Pernambuco Academy of Sciences, recently inducted into the ANE board of directors, and honored by the Recife City Council for her advocacy in defense of the environment and for her commitment to building a more just world — Maria do Carmo has accumulated recognitions that merely affirm a life devoted to sustainability.

RBCIAMB is proud to count her among its history. And on this symbolic day, we celebrate a scientist who has never separated academic rigor from commitment to life — to water, to the climate, to the generations yet to come.

Clarivate launches guide for responsible measurement of research societal impact

The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) at Clarivate has published the third report in its series on the societal impact of research: Clarivate Societal Impact Framework: A guide to responsible impact measurement. The document provides practical guidance for institutions to apply the Framework in a responsible and reproducible manner, with a focus on Web of Science Research Intelligence — Clarivate's new analytical platform.

The guide combines categorization driven by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), diverse data sources, and clear recommendations for interpretation, enabling institutions and researchers to demonstrate the real-world impact of their research beyond traditional citation-based metrics.

Among the Framework's core principles are: the use of indicators as signals, not as proof; the distinction between potential and observed impact; and the responsible aggregation of data into Societal Impact Profiles. The approach is particularly aligned with RBCIAMB's mission regarding indicators related to sustainable development.

The Brazilian Journal of Environmental Sciences (RBCIAMB) proudly celebrates the tribute awarded to Professor Arlindo Philippi Jr., recipient of the 2026 Anísio Teixeira Higher Education Award, granted by the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES).

The award recognizes individuals who have made decisive contributions to the advancement of higher education and graduate studies in Brazil.

A retired full professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) and currently a senior professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies of USP (IEA-USP), Arlindo Philippi Jr. has built a nationally and internationally recognized career in Environmental Sciences, sustainability, sanitation, environmental health, and environmental public management.

Throughout his career, he has held highly strategic positions within the Brazilian scientific system, including the coordination of CAPES’ Environmental Sciences Area and the role of Director of Evaluation at CAPES (DAV), a central position in the evaluation and consolidation of Brazilian graduate education. He also served in important environmental institutions and public agencies, including CETESB and IBAMA.

His academic contributions, institutional leadership, and interdisciplinary work have significantly strengthened Environmental Sciences as a scientific field in Brazil, helping train generations of researchers and supporting graduate programs and public policies throughout the country.

At RBCIAMB, Professor Arlindo Philippi Jr. has played a fundamental role since the journal’s foundation, contributing directly to its consolidation as one of Brazil’s leading scientific journals in the environmental field. Professor Helen Treichel of the Federal University of the Southern Frontier (UFFS) will be awarded the Earth's Future Award in the Environmental Preservation category. The award, granted annually in Rio Grande do Sul, is a partnership between Foundation for Supporting Research in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (FAPERGS) and Jornal do Comércio. It recognizes the excellence of 13 researchers in five categories and will be presented on September 1.

Tribute: National Science Day

Today, July 8th, we celebrate National Science Day and all scientific researchers. It is a fitting tribute to their critical role for development.

But today, the tribute is not just for their outstanding scientific achievements and contributions for the development of Brazil, but also is a tribute to the importance of diversity, inclusion, and a functioning body politic.

In the current context, the Brazilian scientific community, beyond its typical activities, continues its fight against misinformation, resource cuts, and the social devaluation of science. Therefore, many scientists have gone public, through social networks, producing content to inform and educate society.

In Environmental Sciences, this is no different. In addition to producing knowledge about the various aspects of sustainable development, there is a constant effort to enrich public discourse about the importance of the environment, the consequences of negative impacts, and about the continuous need to seek a balance among the various activities of society in the broadest sense, especially as it concerns the maintenance of the ecosystems upon which society depends.

Therefore, this year's tribute is not just to the scientist who lives in each and every one of us and the science developed by our community, but also for those who fight for diversity, citizenship, inclusion, and democratization of knowledge through their expertise and activities.

Congratulations to each and every one who contributes to making RBCIAMB a reputable scientific journal in the Environmental Sciences.
